Guimaraes Portugal

Guimarães is a city in Minho, Portugal and is one of the most historical cities in the country, often referred to as the birthplace of Portugal. It is the first city of Portugal, boasting a beautiful castle and palace from the country's early days. The castle has been recognized as one of the New Portuguese Seven Wonders. The first King (D. Afonso Henriques, also known as D. Afonso, I of Portugal) hailed from here. Located about 50 km from Porto, Guimarães is nestled near a mountain, Penha, which offers stunning views of the entire city. In Guimarães, a bus service allows you to explore the city center. However, the city center isn't very large, so you might prefer to explore on foot and soak in the ambiance of this medieval city. If you're used to buying long-term travel tickets in other cities, you might not need to do so here. To reach Penha Mountain, the best option is to take the Elevators - Teleférico da Penha - and ascend. If you'd rather hike up the mountain, it's very safe, with pleasant paths leading up, but it will take about 30 minutes. Renting a car can be a great option, as traffic jams are rare in this small city. If you're staying somewhere a bit removed from the center, a car can be a convenient mode of transport. It's not too costly to rent a car. However, if you want to truly experience the city, you might want to take longer walks, as the city center is filled with narrow medieval streets that are best explored on foot. Places to see include: Guimarães Castle, Dukes of Braganza Palace (Paço dos Duques de Bragança), Penha Mountain, Largo da Oliveira (Olive Square), Casa de Sezim (Sezim Manor), located in Nespereira (about 5 km away from the city center).
