Day 2: FUNCHAL: WALKING TOUR

Today, discover Funchal on foot and explore its hidden corners. Founded in 1421 and granted city status in 1508, Funchal takes its name from funcho, the Portuguese word for "fennel". When the Portuguese first discovered Madeira in the 15th century, wild fennel grew abundantly in the area where the city now stands.

Explore Funchal's Old Town, where history and modernity coexist in perfect harmony, passing a 17th-century fortress, narrow streets and doors painted by local and international artists. Visit the famous Farmers' Market (Mercado dos Lavradores), where colourful displays of fruit, flowers and fish create a feast for the senses. Continue to the Municipal Square, home to three monuments from different historical periods.

Visit the Sé Cathedral, listed as a National Monument since 1910. Of outstanding historical, architectural and artistic value, its chancel altarpiece was commissioned by King Manuel I between 1510 and 1515. The cathedral also boasts one of the most beautiful wooden ceilings in Portugal, crafted from local wood, as well as Flemish-style choir stalls.

The visit concludes at a Madeira wine cellar, where you will enjoy a tasting of different Madeira wines.

Throughout the 6-kilometre route, let yourself be captivated by the spectacular panoramas and the serene atmosphere of this authentic region of the island. Cross the island's inland highlands to reach São Vicente on the north coast, a whitewashed town nestled among wooded volcanic hills. Continue to Seixal, with its lava pools and famous waterfall, then on to Porto Moniz, where Atlantic waves crash against striking volcanic rock formations.

Proceed to Fanal, a region of rare beauty in the heart of the ancient laurel forest, home to centuries-old trees, some more than 500 years old. After lunch, head to the remote Paul da Serra plateau, which offers panoramic views over both the north and south coasts on clear days.

The final stop is at Cabo Girão, where you can admire the 580-metre-high cliffs from the glass viewing platform.

Located on the hills above the city, the world-famous Monte Palace gardens will captivate you with their exotic plant species, lush landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. Discover fountains, ponds, azulejo-tiled features and Oriental-inspired gardens in an exceptional setting. Stroll among the beautiful flowers and admire the serenity of the majestic swans gliding across the many ponds.

For those seeking adventure, there is the opportunity to experience the famous wicker basket ride back down to Funchal (not included). Accompanied by Madeira's renowned carreiros, this traditional descent promises an unforgettable thrill.
