What a grand thing it is to stroll around a city like Cáceres, where every stone whispers a bit of history. Its monuments from medieval times are among the best preserved. Wander through the narrow lanes of the Ciudad Monumental, the old town, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and graces the city’s skyline with spires, gargoyles, turrets, and massive storks' nests. The monumental highlights are plentiful, with the remarkable Plaza Mayor being an unforgettable standout, along with the excellent Museo de Cáceres, located in a 16th-century mansion and built over an evocative 12th-century aljibe (cistern), a surviving piece of Cáceres' Muslim castle. Cáceres is a favourite spot for nature enthusiasts due to its abundance of natural resources just a stone's throw from the city centre, including the Monfragüe National Park and a nature reserve. The Jerte valley is also well worth a visit in spring to see the cherry trees in bloom. Make the most of the cool of the night, when the crowds have dispersed, to uncover a city that transports you directly to the past.
