The oldest documents found date from the year 964 and refer to a will that mentions houses, orchards and vineyards in Esplugues, but without mentioning any village. From 12th-century records, there are references to the Picalqués family, the most important local family and owners of a castle (on the site of the current Tower of the Lions), which is the most important place to visit in this town.
