Dominée par la cathédrale et ses ponts enjambant l'Ouse et la Foss, York vous invite à flâner dans ses quartiers anciens aux teintes rosées. Protégée depuis longtemps par de magnifiques remparts du XIIIe siècle, encore visibles dans la majeure partie de la ville, York vous charmera. Ces remparts surplombent les quatre portes principales de la ville : Micklegate, Bootham, Monk et Walmgate. Attention, à York, les rues s'appellent « gates », les portes « bars » et les bars « pubs ». Les ruelles pittoresques de York sont souvent bondées de touristes, mais malgré l'affluence, le riche patrimoine historique de la ville mérite d'être exploré. Une promenade le long des remparts médiévaux est une excellente façon de découvrir York. Commencez à Bootham Bar et dirigez-vous vers Monk Bar. C'est la plus belle partie des remparts, offrant des aperçus de la cathédrale à travers les arbres. On estime que la cathédrale abrite plus de la moitié des vitraux médiévaux d'Angleterre. La Grande Fenêtre Est est le plus grand vitrail du monde. Montez les 275 marches de la Tour Lanterne pour admirer un panorama exceptionnel et visitez le Musée de la Crypte pour découvrir l'histoire archéologique et architecturale du site. Le Musée du Château est incontournable : c'est l'un des meilleurs musées d'art populaire au monde. Visitez Kirkgate, une reconstitution pavée d'une rue victorienne qui vous transportera dans le passé. Ville imprégnée d'histoire, York est la destination idéale pour les passionnés d'histoire. Mais York est bien plus qu'une simple ville patrimoniale : ses pubs sont réputés pour leur ambiance chaleureuse et leurs concerts de musique folk.
